Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
