A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
